Nerath

Nerath was a great human empire that arose out of the city-state of Nera. The accession of Atreus, the first recognized emperor of Nerath, marks year zero according to the scheme of Nera-reckoning.

The emperor of Nerath was nominally determined by a vote of its citizens upon the death of the prior emperor, though this was more or less a fiction, since the vote (almost) always resulted in the former emperor’s heir acceding. Or, in the not uncommon case of a coup, the populace typically ratified the rebel leader’s treason by legitimizing his or her claim to the throne. The empire finally fell in the mid-400s, when a failed coup led to a prolonged civil war, during which no fewer than four factions staked a claim to the throne. By the time the fighting ended around 500, most of Nerath’s former provinces were de facto self-governing, and the populace had lost the will to fight to reclaim them.

The Nentir Vale region formed the northernmost frontier of the Nerath.
