People of Fallcrest, I implore you!
The slaying stones were a series of eight magical artifacts commissioned by Kiris Declan, the ruler of the independent city of Kiris Dahn. They were developed by the arcane engineering consortium known as the Merchants of Invention. Each stone was imbued with the power to immediately kill one person located anywhere within a few miles of the city.
Although the stones were ostensibly intended to protect the city from outside invasion, most of the stones wound up being used by younger brothers of the ruling family against their elder brothers, or by competing advisors against one another, or by the ruling family against peasant leaders agitating for expanded civil liberties. Some historians believe that the slaying stones insulated the ruling family from making necessary reforms in the city, and thus contributed to the eventual fall of the city to goblins out of Daggerburg in 578.
Although history records that each of the eight slaying stones commissioned by Declan was used, Treona has recently discovered records indicating that Kiris Chad, Declan’s son, secretly commissioned a ninth slaying stone, which she believes is still hidden somewhere in the ruins of Kiris Dahn. She passed this information along to her mysterious associate, Dreus, who, it now appears, is intent on securing the missing stone for herself and reverse-engineering it for sale to the highest bidder. Treona has bidden the party to thwart Dreus’ plans.
