People of Fallcrest, I implore you!
Faren Markelhay is the hereditary Lord Warden of Fallcrest. He is married to the minor wizard, Allande Markelhay, with whom he has four sons ranging in age from eight to eighteen. Approaching sixty, Faren’s black hair now covers only the back half of his head. He is a kindly and diligent bureaucrat, well-loved by the populace, but is not as politically savvy as many of his forebears were.
Markelhay’s family hails from the Gray Downs, north of Fallcrest, where they were known as the Marclays before the influence of Nerath extended to the Nentir Vale. The Marclays were one of a number of feuding highland clans in those days. With the arrival of Nerath in the 100’s, Faren’s ancestor, Duncan Marclay, allied his people with the great empire, and together, they eliminated the rival clans of the Gray Downs to the greater glory of Nerath. Marclay was rewarded by the imperial governor, who installed him as the first Lord Warden of Fallcrest. It was at this time that Marclay adopted the name “Markelhay,” a Nerathicized version of his family name.
In the spring of 588, in desperation to put an end to the kobold caravan raids that were wreaking havoc on local trade, Markelhay offered the party a bounty of 250 gold pieces to raid the kobolds’ hideout (a ruined manor from the days of Nerathian dominance), and return with proof that they had routed the bandits.
